The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner written by Khaled Hosseini is a novel I highly recommend. I have created a book talk on “The Kite Runner”using VoiceThread. I hope you enjoy it and become inspired to read this engaging book. I honestly had a hard time putting it down, and it’s been awhile since I’ve read a book that has had such a profound effect on me.

  1. My Friend read this book in high school, she said it was amazing and she couldn’t put it down, but at the same time it was heartbreaking and sad at times. It was kinda funny one second she loved it and another absolutely hated it cause it made her sad. lol

  2. This book has so many twists and surprises that it does take you on an emotional roller coaster. The true beauty of it though is that it has the potential to evoke empathy and various emotions. Not all novels can create an engaging emotional connection with its readers, which is what makes this book truly special.

  3. This would be an awesome tool for introducing the book to your class, however, in the future, try not to retell the whole book in your book talk. As a rule, if it’s an important part of the story, don’t give it away! Your first pages in your voice thread, however, very effectively covered a lot of the information my Gr. 12 English teacher had to go through before we began the book. This intro is the strong point in your voicethread. If you would be interested in creating a shorter version focusing on introducing the book, I would love to send it to my teacher to use in her classroom. Also, check out this site. http://www.ramuandthekite.com . Ramu is a local kite maker who came to our classroom, made us all fighter kites, and taught us how to fight with them, all for a relatively small fee (for materials). It’s a great way to end a unit on this book.

  4. Thank you Nicole for your insights and resources. I think that voicethread could be a great tool to use for introducing books in the classroom, but the one I have posted is an actual booktalk I am using for a University class as part of a presentation. Although it is a wonderful book, I would not feel comfortable using it with students in my targeted teaching area. If I were to present this to a group of students I certainly would have included the background information but would have made it shorter. I like the idea of having a kit maker as a guest presenter in the classroom as a unit end, thank you for that resource.

It is important in book talks not to give away the endings, which is why my book talk only includes the first half of the book’s content. It is almost a 400 page book, so there is a lot of content and storyline to it, and I did not give away the juicy parts or information that is revealed later in the book.
